A History in the Key of Bolduc

With the next Bolduc generation, Christian and Catherine, ready to take over the reins after being educated at the finest German and American institutions, the founders of Pianos André Bolduc foresee a bright future. The company has become Quebec’s leading centre for piano expertise and fine piano sales.
  • 1978THE SPARK
Being a cabinet-maker, Andre Bolduc decides to repair his wife’s antique piano.
  • 1979A PASSION IS BORN
Andre Bolduc is impressed with the structure of the piano and mostly by the precision of the action. He decides to attend a training in the United States and soon becomes an active member of the Piano Technicians Guild, an international association for piano tuners and rebuilders.
  • 1980MOVING FORWARD
Andre is driven by his new passion and decides to attend many trainings and classes in the US and in Germany.
  • 1985THE MAKING OF A SOLID HARD MAPLE PIN-BLOCK
Being a cabinet-maker, André wants to use only the best raw materials for his repairs and rebuildings. The pinblock plays an important role in the piano. It holds the strings. So he decides to create a solid Canadian maple pinblock. Our sugar maple, the Acer saccharum has proven to be the very best wood for the making of pinblocks.
  • 1988BUILDING A FACTORY
To fill the demand of our popular BolducBlock, both in Canada and USA, a first factory is built and 2 employees are hired.
  • 1989GROWTH AND SUCCESS
Starting with the distribution of new and restored pianos.
  • 1990OPENING OF ARQUEMUSE MUSIC SCHOOL IN ST-JOSEPH
Michelle Lord, associate in business and wife of Andre Bolduc, is dedicated to music teaching in her own town. She creates a music school where piano, violin, guitar and singing is taught by professional teachers.
  • 1991THE MAKING OF THE BOLDUC SOUNDBOARDS
Realizing that most of the soundboards in many older pianos were cracked – sometimes as many as 25 cracks – Andre thought it would be better to replace than repair. He decided to make his first planks using our Canadian white spruce. After presenting this new product to manufacturers, the company received an excellent response and built a second factory to better serve these new clients.
  • 1993A SAW MILL IN OUR OWN YARD!
The quarter-sawn cut is specific to the making of string-instruments. Regular flat-sawn cuts cannot be used for making soundboards. Therefore, a portable saw mill becomes a must for the company to move forward and to maximize the valued spruce and maple logs.
  • 1996TRAINING IN GERMANY
Both Christian and Catherine had started studying and working with their father when in 1996 they left for Germany to pursue a full-year training in the piano making, tuning and regulating.
